Mountain hiking – view the iconic summits of Helgeland

Hestmannen
571 meters above sea level.

From the sea houses you look straight towards the mighty Hestmannen bathing in the midnight sun on summer evenings. From Kvarøy, it’s about 15 minutes by boat to the harbor south of Hestmona with a guest berth for boats. On the way from the harbor you will find markings towards Hestmannen and the trail to the top. The trail follows an old cable car for most of the climb, while the last few meters are a steep path that requires a bit of splitting at the very end before you reach the top. This is a slightly demanding hiking trail that is best suited to older children and adults, but it’s definitely worth the effort when you get to the top and enjoy the view.

Lurøyfjellet
685 meters above sea level

This is a mountain peak for everyone. The hike starts from Kvarøy by boat to Torshavn restaurant on Lurøy where you walk on the road towards the school on Lurøy. At the intersection near the school, turn left before you find the well-marked trail from the main road. The path to the top is clearly marked and easy to walk for young and old. At the top, there is a directional sign pointing to most of the mountain peaks in Helgeland. Here you can see Svartisen, Okstindan, De syvsøstre and Træna. On the way back, we recommend a stop at Torshavn for a refreshment or a good dinner before jumping on the boat back to Kvarøy.

Rødøyløva
443 meters above sea level.

The trip starts by boat to the lovely harbor at Klokkergården. From Klokkergården, it’s a few meters along the road to the path towards the stone staircase that takes you up to the mighty Rødøyløva. The staircase is made of stone by Sherpas from Nepal and swings easily and playfully up to the top. The climb is steady and a little steep towards the top, but is a great challenge for young and old alike. The trail is well marked and you can choose whether you want to enjoy the view of the sea, or feel your stomach drop right at the edge of Rødøyløva with its 400 meters straight down into the sea.

If you don’t travel by boat yourself, there is a good alternative to travel to and from Rødøy on the NEX express boat. It leaves at 07:40 from Kvarøy to Rødøy, and at 18:55 from Rødøy back to Kvarøy.
